Benefits & Features
Vitamin C is an essential vitamin for the human body. It supports our immune system and is a great antioxidant. It may help to lower blood pressure, alleviate the common cold and heal infections, reduce chronic pain, aid in collagen synthesis (important for skin and good healing), decrease hardening of the arteries, improve physical performance and increase muscle strength.
The effectiveness of Vitamin C can be very dose-dependent. Research shows it must be taken in high doses for optimum therapeutic response, yet the highest dose typically available is 1000mg, still on the low end of an effective dose. DefendR has 5000mg of Vitamin C per scoop to ensure the body receives the full benefits of this powerful vitamin.
There is little debate about the benefits of antioxidants. Many expensive supplements are sold as antioxidant formulas and, although they may be helpful, most are no better than Vitamin C, which is drastically more affordable. High intensity workouts cause a huge amount of oxidative stress on the body. If athletes do not counteract oxidation, the body will spend more time and energy healing damage than laying down new muscle and increasing strength. Oxidation is a component of most chronic diseases and if not counteracted, its long-term effects can drastically diminish your health.
Ingredients
Because Vitamin C is water soluble, a common misconception is that it can’t be helpful because it passes through the system in your urine. That logic is as silly as saying you don’t need water because it passes through your system, as well. Vitamin C is working as it travels through your body, and by the time it’s left your system, its work is done. Because it’s water soluble, it’s almost impossible to get too much Vitamin C, so it’s very safe to maximize dosing and enjoy the positive effects.
Vitamin D is necessary for all biological functions. In recent years vast research has confirmed the many benefits of Vitamin D. It helps boost the immune system, lowers blood pressure, improves bone health, reduces blood vessel wall stiffness, and lowers cholesterol. It helps with diabetes, obesity, muscle weakness, and skin conditions. Vitamin D helps to increase testosterone.
Because Vitamin D blood levels are usually low in a majority of the population, sun and supplementation are necessary to maintain optimal levels.
B-vitamins are needed for energy production and cell metabolism. They help break down carbohydrates, fats and protein so the body can use them. They also help improve immune function, balance blood cholesterol, are part of hundreds of enzyme reactions in the body’s cells, and maintain healthy nerve function. Recent research shows B-vitamins also lower stroke risk. B-vitamins are water-soluble and need to be supplemented. Since absorption is an issue, higher doses ensure enough nutrients reach the body. Athletes typically need B-vitamins at a higher dose to keep up with their physical demands
Zinc is a trace element found in the cells of the immune system, and is necessary for immune cells to function properly. Zinc deficiencies not only dramatically limit the body’s ability to fight off infections and viruses, but also increase inflammation. Low amounts of zinc also play a role in chronic diseases with an inflammatory component, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.
